Chrysanthemum plants are one of the most popular fall time flowers and they can be planted at any time. They prefer full to partial sun and thrive in well drained soil. Chrysanthemums have shallow roots, so at least for the first year that they are planted they need to be watered regularly through late fall. With mums we would have to agree with the old wives tale that says "if it freezes dry, it will die".
