Do you speak "gazpacho?"

Many people know that gazpacho is a cold vegetable soup made famous in Spain. I think of it as a cold vegetarian chili--so refreshing on hot summer days! As with chili, there's countless variations on how to make it. Food, like people, has a history and gazpacho's is fascinating. It started in the Arab world, made it to Spain and, after it was discovered that the New World had tomatoes and chili peppers, "Ay, carumba!" Gazpacho as we know it today evolved. The word "gazpacho" essentially means "left overs." Find out more here: History of gazpacho: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gazpacho The website includes recipe information.

Speaking of recipes, we have added a link on our home page (www.heirloompeacegardens.org) for Recipes to Share. We'll put a favorite gazpacho recipe up there, featuring New World ingredients, as well as a host of other recipes soon. Contact us with your favorite summer garden recipes and we'll share those as well!

Phil Sherry and I traveled to Athens, Michigan recently, to visit our friends at the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi reservation. Their ancestors were originally from this part of the country, and much of what we're doing at HPG honors those traditions. A group of folks from there will be visiting us here soon, as they are very interested in this unique community effort that is helping keep their traditions alive. A day and time for that visit will be announced here in a future newsletter, so stay tuned. The community will be invited to participate. Happy gardening!

Sincerely,

Tim
